Histria Books is pleased to announce the paperback release of The Lady in the Castle by R.L. Tecklenburg. This novel is published by Histria Fiction, an imprint of Histria Books dedicated to outstanding original works of fiction.
The Lady in the Castle centers on Maria Von Eickler, an Austrian aristocrat imprisoned by the Gestapo, whose sheer will to survive is anchored by the hope of reuniting with her soldier husband, Josef. Their fates collide during one of the strangest events of World War II: the actual Battle of Castle Itter, where American troops, French politicians, and defecting German soldiers fought side by side against an advancing SS battalion.
What sets this book apart is its refusal to stop at the battlefield. It follows Maria into the wreckage of post-war Austria, dropping readers into a ruined economy and the violent Vienna labor strikes of 1950. The author strips away the usual gloss of historical fiction to focus on the relentless work of rebuilding a life. It offers a sharp, grounded look at the lifelong scars of war, giving readers an honest take on what survival actually costs.
Robert “R.L.” Tecklenburg writes historical fiction deeply informed by his own combat experience and years spent working as a trauma therapist for fellow veterans. Drawing inspiration from Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, and Viktor Frankl, he shares his literary heroes’ understanding of how war permanently alters the human psyche. He is the author of Chasing Pancho Villa, Prague: Darkness Descending, and Cold War. Originally from Iowa, he now lives in Virginia.
