Histria Books is pleased to announce the release of The Ruby Ghost by June Calvin. This story is published by Histria Romance, an imprint of Histria Books dedicated to outstanding books in the romance genre.
Penelope Jones needs a governess’s salary, not a haunting. But dreams of a ruined castle and a woman wearing rubies draw her toward Silverthorne, where the prospect of employment comes with unsettling questions and an inconvenient attraction to James Betterton. In June Calvin’s The Ruby Ghost, historical romance and supernatural mystery meet through a heroine whose immediate concerns are wonderfully concrete: food, references, family obligations, and the cost of trusting a wealthy man. The contrast gives the story its particular bite. A handsome face can threaten Penelope’s livelihood as surely as any apparition threatens her sleep, while brisk exchanges keep the atmosphere from becoming solemn.
For readers who want romance to acknowledge the unequal terms on which attraction operates, there is something especially relevant here. Calvin makes room for desire without forgetting the woman who must calculate what indulging it could cost, even before the ghosts have made their demands.
June Calvin, a well known Signet author, wrote twelve Regency romances, including her debut novel, The Baron and the Bookseller, which won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award in 1993. Before finding her true calling as a novelist, Calvin held a diverse array of professional roles, drawing on experiences as a teacher, public relations professional, newspaper reporter, and museum educator. She currently resides in Oklahoma with her husband of 62 years, where she enjoys life near her son, daughter-in-love, and young grandson.
