In the 13th century BC, Anat, a young beauty, is groomed for sale and sold to a cruel man who abuses and rapes her. To attempt escape with their young son, she risks her life. Meanwhile, her childhood friend David, unable to marry his ideal, wanders Canaan in a fruitless search for a woman whose beauty equals Anat’s. The challenges they face are rooted in beliefs that persist into the 21st century, making The Flower of Canaan one for the ages.

Flood authored a nonfiction book, Islands Apart: Chronicles of Family Healing (1999), about teen addiction, their journeys, and their families’ response. His short story, “Spaceman,” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Retired from a tech career at Stanford University and consulting in higher education, he lives with his wife near San Francisco.
