Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) was one of the most influential historians of religion and philosophers of the twentieth century. Born in Bucharest, Romania, he became a professor at the University of Chicago where he taught for decades. His works on the history of religions, mythology, and mysticism have been translated into numerous languages and remain foundational texts in religious studies.
