Kurt W. Treptow

Kurt W. Treptow was an American historian and the founding director of the Center for Romanian Studies in Iași, Romania. A specialist in Romanian and Central European history, he devoted his career to making Romania’s past accessible to English-language readers, authoring and editing more than a dozen landmark works on subjects ranging from medieval Wallachia to modern Romanian politics and culture.

Among his best-known works are Vlad III Dracula: The Life and Times of the Historical Dracula and a comprehensive study of Dracula: Essays on the Life and Times of Vlad the Impaler, which remain standard references in the field. He also edited bilingual editions of Romanian poetry, including the works of Mihai Eminescu, and produced multi-volume studies on Romania’s role in the First World War and its political development through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
